The Huey Story

The 1962 UH-1B helicopter was previously owned by an Arkansas
hospital and through research of the serial number was discovered to
have originally belonged to the U.S. Air Force and utilized at a
missile site.  However, the exact use and original location of the
helicopter is still unknown.

It has been over 4 years since we began this labor of love restoring
the Huey to its original Vietnam-era form.  Through a lot of hard
work the Huey is almost complete.
Hopefully, we will acquire and install an engine soon.  Additionally,
interior lining still needs to be installed in the cabin and the
instrument panel needs to be completed.
History
The Restoration Process
  • Pressure-washed inside and out, along with all of the major
    components
  • Removed all panels and cowling
  • Built canopy for sun and weather protection
  • Reconditioned and made doors operational
  • Replaced cabin top windows
  • Sanded inside and out
  • Prime and painted to original O.D. exterior and gray interior
with tail numbers and "U.S. Army" emblazoned on the tail
    boom
  • Painted skids with non-slip surface
  • Reconditioned and installed mast
  • Installed instrument panel with some instruments in place
  • Painted and installed tail rotor and main rotor assembly
  • Replaced civilian seats with military armored seats
  • Painted nose art
Additionally, a trailer donated by our member, Ralph Pettis, was redesigned to transport the Huey to
different events.  It has been wired for lights, with a mounted tool box and adapters for flags and
banners.  There is also a support system on the trailer to secure the main rotor allowing us to transport
the Huey effortlessly using a standard pick-up truck.
Again, the Huey restoration project would not be possible without the generous donations and support
of our sponcers.
